Laurie Lundquist

Mountain Pass Pedestrian Bridge, Phoenix, Arizona

Laurie Lundquist is an environmental artist with deep interests in both the natural and engineered systems at work in the urban landscape. The desire to strengthen a “connection to place” drives her work on many levels. Land use history, geography, ecology and a sculptural sensibility inform concepts that will resonate with a given site. Laurie collaborates effectively with the public, stakeholders, and design professionals to create site-specific works for public places. She holds an MFA from Arizona State University. She also studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and the Maine College of Art.

The Mountain Pass concept was inspired by the jagged profile of the nearby Piestewa Mountain range. The design uses the flexible qualities of chain link fencing to meet the safety requirements for pedestrian bridges. Lundquist worked with SVR Inc. and HDR Engineers to develop the concept. The project is a joint effort between the City of Phoenix and the Arizona Department of Transportation.  Materials: Concrete, Steel and Chain Link. Length 300’ Ht.16’
